چکیده

In this study, we analyze the role of several linguistic cues (prosodic units, pitch contours, discourse markers, morphological categories, and gaze direction) in French turntaking face-to-face interactions. Specifically, we investigate vocal and gestural backchannel signals (BCs) produced by a recipient to show his active listening. We show that some particular pitch contours and discursive markers play a systematic role in inducing both gestural and vocal BCs. Conversely, morphological categories and gestural cues rather play a role for gestural BCs.

A Critical Visual Analysis of Gender Representation of ELT Materials from a Multimodal Perspective

This content analysis study, employing a multimodal perspective and critical visual analysis, set out to analyze gender representations in Top Notch series, one of the highly used ELT textbooks in Iran. For this purpose, six images were selected from these series and analyzed in terms of ‘representational’, ‘interactive’ and ‘compositional’ modes of meanings. The result indicated that there are...

Multimodal Backchannels for Embodied Conversational Agents

One of the most desirable characteristics of an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) is the capability of interacting with users in a human-like manner. While listening to a user, an ECA should be able to provide backchannel signals through visual and acoustic modalities. In this work we propose an improvement of our previous system to generate multimodal backchannel signals on visual and acoust...

ACADEMIC WRITING REVISITED: A PHRASEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS HIGH-STAKE GENRES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF LEXICAL BUNDLES

Lexical bundles are frequent word combinations that commonly appear in different registers. They have been the subject of much research in the area of corpus linguistics during the last decade. While most previous studies of bundles have mainly focused on variations in the use of these word combinations across different registers and a number of disciplines, not much research has been done to e...

Predicting Listener Backchannels: A Probabilistic Multimodal Approach

During face-to-face interactions, listeners use backchannel feedback such as head nods as a signal to the speaker that the communication is working and that they should continue speaking. Predicting these backchannel opportunities is an important milestone for building engaging and natural virtual humans. In this paper we show how sequential probabilistic models (e.g., Hidden Markov Model (HMM)...

Bitching, bouncing and brawling - How backchannels brought colour to conference calls

This paper addresses the research question: How do digital backchannels, mediated by Real-Time Communications, facilitate the progress of conference calls? It is argued that whilst the fields of Distributed Work and Computer Supported Collaborative Work have been studied in depth, research into Real-Time Communications (RTC) and Instant Messaging (IM) is at an early stage. There is a paucity of...
